Yamaha Virago 1100 Review

The Yamaha Virago 1100 was the first V twin cruiser motorcycle. This bike ,started in production in 1981 by the Yamaha Motor Corporation as a 750cc machine and finally reached 1063cc in 1986. After 2000 it was discontinued as the Star line of cruiser motorcycles replaced them, all carrying a 1063 cc power plant. In 2007 the Virago name was no longer in use. The Star line now consists of the Yamaha Star V Star 1100 Silverado, the Yamaha Star V Star 1100 classic, and the Yamaha Star V Star 1100 Custom.

The Yamaha Virago 1100 had starter problems in the earlier models which were later corrected. It had a 5 speed shaft drive as opposed to a chain or belt which are more common on cruiser cycles. It had 19" front tires and 15" rear tires. Its seat height was 28" the average for a cruiser.

Surprisingly, it had an air-cooled engine. The only bikes of medium range power plants besides the Virago that has air-cooled engines are the Harleys. It had a 4.4 gallon fuel capacity. Its dry weight was 487 lbs. Yamaha was one of the companies affected when Harley Davidson in 1984 tried to get all Japanese bikes over 700cc slapped with a tariff. Another bike gone forever.
