To say that the new Kawasaki Councours (or Connie for short) is just a dressed up Ninja would be selling this bike short. The Connie has the heart of a Ninja. The 1,352cc liquid cooled, 16 valve, double overhead cam in-line four cylinder. Each cylinder has 84.0 mm bore and 61mm of stroke. The engine has a 10.7:1 compression ratio with an impressive, 100.3 foot pound of torque at 6,200 rpm. To control all this power produced, Kawasaki incorporates a “Variable Valve Timing System” to provide smooth power all the way across the rev range. This VVT has few moving parts, but what it does is pretty clever. Depending on the engine RPM and throttle position, the intake cam can be hydraulically advanced or retarded up to 23.8 degrees. This gives the engine “high torque output” all across the powerband.

To increase rider comfort and further reduce vibration, dual secondary engine balancers help insure smooth engine operation. Another thing that adds to performance is the “ram air induction”. A straighter ram air duct supplies cooler high pressure air to the engine for maximum performance, via the air box. At this point a the dual throttle valve system lets the “32 bit electronic control unit” take over. The throttle bodies are fitted with sub-throttle valves.  This system acts similar to the throttle response of a constant velocity carburetor system. The ignition is digital, and controlled by the ECU. Ignition timing is advanced to enhance power through the low and mid power range; this improves fuel economy and provides cleaner emissions without loss of power. Each of the cylinders has their own coil that independently fires the spark plugs at the optimum instant no matter the rpm.
The Kawasaki Concours handles at touring speeds as well as high speeds, thanks to the very light, but rigid frame. A massive steering head helps add to this. In the end the design helps achieve high speed stability. This bike was built with comfort and speed in mind. You can go from highways to curving mountain roads in comfort. Oh, I didn’t mention that you would look good doing it!
